What You Need to Know about the Kentucky Drivers License Point System

The state of Kentucky manages the suspension and revocation of driving privileges through a point system. When you are ticketed and convicted for a traffic violation, with few exceptions, you accumulate points on your record. Most infractions will result in three points on your record, but more serious offenses, such as excessive speeding, failing to stop for a school bus, or eluding police, can result in six points on your record, or even the immediate suspension of driving privileges. All points remain on your record for two years from the date of conviction.

If you accumulate 12 or more points on your record, a hearing will be held to determine possible suspension of your driving privileges. If you are under the age of 18, you will be required to attend this hearing if you accumulate seven points on your record. Failure to appear at the hearing will result in an automatic suspension of your license for six months for the first time, 12 months for a second time, and two years for every additional accumulation of 12 points.

At the hearing, you may request that you be placed on probation and attend a driver improvement clinic put on by the state of Kentucky. You may only obtain one probation placement in any given two-year period.

At Claycomb & Kidd, PLLC, we handle the defense of all types of traffic violations. See our page on traffic violations defense to learn more.
